The Montauk life for me

The Montauk life for me

We get asked a lot about the name of our business. What's Montauk?

Well, it's more about the where. And why.

The Montauk Lighting Co. was born from a love of transitional American interiors. The style of lighting we sell is inspired by the architecture of New York City and in particular, the classic homes in the Hamptons. Our name is taken from that very area - you’ll find Montauk at the tip of Long Island. To quote Andy Warhol, Montauk is at “the little at the end of Long Island”.

Montauk is a little more ‘raw’ than the other towns in the uber-glamorous Hamptons. It is famous for its incredible beaches and sunsets and the laid-back vibe. But make no mistake, it’s no backwater town. And that’s what makes it all the more special.

We’ve always identified our home town of Perth as being a little like Montauk. A place that is relaxed and a little off the beaten track, where nature is the star and people can escape the frantic pace of City life and rejuvenate.

Think rugged coastal walks in amazing nature reserves, morning yoga and stand up-paddle boarding, a round of golf or a spot of fishing. The shopping also punches above its weight and high-end stores are interspersed with bohemian, artisan shops and galleries. There’s also the popular Montauk Point Light, New York state’s first lighthouse and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States.

Seafood is the culinary star in this sea-side town, which is also known for its eclectic night life.

Speaking of which, here’s to holidaying in Montauk and ending each day watching the sunset over the sea. And here’s to spending the evening under the light of our absolute favourite festoon lights. These ones were spotted at Montauk’s The Surf Lodge.
