Concrete gets Nood

Concrete gets Nood

It’s great to see so many wonderful creatives emerging in WA, and here’s some fresh goodness in the form of Nood Co. - a concrete furniture and homewares company that fuses Scandinavian and Australian design to create a unique product offering. Nood Co. take their craft seriously and they’ve managed to tip the stereotypical, bland concrete concept on its head to create a fresh, modern and contemporary range of products.

Headed up by the talented Matt Di Costa (Product Designer) and Chris Walker (Head Manufacturer), Matt describes the Nood Co. design cornerstone.

"For concrete to be accepted as a legitimate furniture item, it has to be usable in all styles of interiors, all rooms in a house and suit all moods. Nood Co. designs are contemporary and feminine. Curves are the uniting design feature of Nood Co.’s collection. All square corners have been removed. Everything is thin, silky and sleek. The products are sealed to deal with kids, spills and house parties. They are real world products, with a showroom finish," he says.

No stranger to the limelight, Matt Di Costa and his wife Kim were viewer favourites on The Block and Nood Co. is an extension of their love of design and concrete. In the last couple of years this generous duo have also continued the renovation run with their very own TV series, Matt & Kim to the Rescue on Channel 9 – doing extraordinary things for a number of WA families who were doing it tough in some way or another. All this while renovating their very own stunning home which they’ve just completed.

Working together with fellow Noodist Chris, Nood Co. have spent the last 18 months designing, refining and road testing concrete in new forms. Having just launched their new range of products, they’ve certainly nailed the aesthetic – the range includes stunning sinks and troughs, beautifully crafted furniture pieces in the form of dining, coffee and side tables, as well as a number of must-have homewares such as mirrors, bowls, vessels and our personal favourite, the Kevin Stool!

The best thing is that this just isn’t concrete as you know it. The colour palette is as surprising as it is fun, on-trend and lustworthy. From Blush Pink and Pastel Peach to the hue of Pantone’s Colour of Year 2017 (Greenery) in Mint, there’s also a punchy Copan Blue and the staple favourites in Ivory, Mid Tone Grey and Charcoal.

Working on the range was all about balancing form and function. Finding the right mix to ensure a strong, durable finish that was also lightweight and easier to transport. It also had to be watertight to ensure longevity and stain resistance.

Nood Co. Product Designer Matt says, “When we sat down to structure Nood Co. we wrote an honest list of why concrete hadn’t effectively joined the world of furniture yet. It was bulky, heavy, difficult to transport, it wasn’t sealed effectively enough to match consumer expectations. A lot if it was fake (faux) to look like concrete but had no real quality of finish/integrity. No one had made it beautiful, affordable, functional, transportable. We changed all of that.”

Along with improved product standards Nood Co has made the shopping experience much easier. They offer free delivery to all capital cities in Australia, on any product.

“Our concrete pieces are lighter and much, much stronger than anything else on the market, so we are able to transport these pieces anywhere in the world. With that luxury we decided to offer free delivery to create ease for our customers. The Nood team are avid designers/furniture shoppers themselves and understand how important a smooth shopping experience is,” says Matt.

We’ve both been big fans of Matt and Chris’ handiwork in the past. In fact, we had the guys polish plaster some features walls and fences around the pool and garden at our home. They love this stuff, and it shows. Nood Co. just takes this love another step forward and showcases what passion and creativity can achieve.
